Despite variations of competitiveness across industries, the chances of getting accepted for a graduate job position are as low as 3%. How did we reach this number?

Well according to a recent AAGE report, on average:

  • Only 37% of candidates make it past the resume screening stage for an interview
  • 20% of those candidates make it to the final round
  • Of those candidates that make it to the final round, 22% of the final candidates are offered a position
  • Only 88% of offers are then accepted

How does this look?

3 Reasons Why Only 3% Of Graduate Applications Result In A Job Offer Offer 1

A Switch in Loyalty

Employee loyalty has changed a lot over the last three decades. In the past, graduates who were hired by a company would work their way up to their desired position over many years. Now, employees are more likely to move from job to job across multiple different companies and even industries. This means that companies need to be wary of who they decide to hire and train up – to get their return on investment over time. Workers are less likely to stay at a single company for the course of their career and hirers have become more selective about who they employ because of it.

This is one of the reasons why graduates are finding it difficult to find a job in 2020.

Outdated / Traditional Recruitment Processes

Unfortunately, a graduate application will only be successful if the person reading the application or resume reads and spots desired experience, skills, and personality traits in the form of keywords. When it comes to scanning documents, there is always the problem of potential human error: fatigue of the reader, experience of the recruiter, and general ability of the judge of the application to see all the important points on documents.

When relying on humans for candidate selection in the graduate recruitment process, there is a chance that good resumes and applications are overlooked and ignored.

Bad Applications

We can’t blame everything on the employer or recruitment agency though. Very often the problem is actually the resume or application! Successful graduates effectively showcase their skills and experience in their resumes. Poorly written, outdated, and bland resumes are all too common in the hiring process and lower the graduate’s chances of getting through to the interview rounds.

Be Seen & Get Hired

Don’t feel discouraged! Although the graduate hiring process is tough, there are ways to get noticed. To make sure that your resume stands out from the masses, your best hope is to ensure that your resume is up to date, simple, your keywords are visible, and your resume is specific to the role for which you’re applying.

Another tactic is to have your resume “read” digitally. Modern digital recruitment platforms, such as Nomad Now, often have embedded technology that matches keywords (skills, experience, personality traits, qualifications, etc.) on resumes and job applications to relevant job openings and advertisements. This means there is less room for human error and higher chances that your resume will be put forward to graduate hirers.

Nomad Now uses advanced search algorithms to rapidly and accurately match job seeker resumes to job specifications. Having a job-seeker profile on Nomad Now increases your chances of being selected by employers for their available jobs.
